Typing improvement planner

Turn a speed goal into an average daily improvement target.

How this works

Enter the values shown, review the result, and verify assumptions before acting. The calculation is performed on your device without uploading these entries.

Turn a speed goal into an average daily improvement target. The input fields are labeled with the units or formats used in the calculation. Change one value at a time to see how the result responds, and compare the output with the worked example below.

Formula or method

(target WPM − current WPM) ÷ days

The method above describes the calculation or algorithm being used by this browser utility. It is shown so you can understand the result, check assumptions and repeat the calculation independently if needed.

Worked example

Improving from 40 to 60 WPM over 20 days would require 1 WPM/day on average.

Limitations and accuracy

A planning calculation, not a guarantee of improvement.

The calculation runs locally in your browser. No result is guaranteed to be suitable for financial, legal, medical, or safety-critical decisions. Check independent authoritative sources in those cases.

More context

Most typing tests report words per minute by dividing correctly typed characters by five and then scaling to one minute. Accuracy should be assessed separately: a fast attempt with many mistakes is not necessarily more useful than a controlled, slightly slower attempt. To track improvement, take several comparable tests using the same time limit. A single score can be distorted by familiarity with the sample, punctuation, fatigue or the input device.
